How to Take Great Instant Photos
The analog charm of instant photography is maximized with a little attention to detail. Here are tips to get the most out of your camera rental.
Set the Distance
For selfies or any close-up photo taken within arm’s length, use Close-Up mode to keep your picture sharp and clear.
How to turn it on (depends on your camera):
- Retro Mini and Mini 11: Pull the lens out until you see “Selfie On”
- All others: Twist the lens ring to “Close Up”
To line up your selfie, use the small mirror next to the lens. If you're looking through the viewfinder, position your subject a little toward the bottom left for the best framing.

Fill the Frame
Instant photos have a soft, nostalgic charm, but to capture the best detail and lighting, make sure your subjects fill the frame.
The flash works best within 7 feet of the camera—perfect for snapping small group shots. Indoors or at night, staying in this range keeps faces bright and clear.
But don’t get too close! If the camera is right up against a face or object, the flash may be too harsh. A good rule of thumb is to stay at least an arm’s length away while still within that 7-foot sweet spot for the best balance of light.
Shooting from too far away can make faces look dark and details appear blurry—so get in close for sharp, well-lit shots!
If you’re photographing larger groups, consider using a Square or Wide camera. These formats give you more photo area to fit everyone in without losing detail.

Avoid Super Bright Lights and Reflections
Bright lights and shiny surfaces can cause dark spots in your instant photos. To avoid this, try not to aim the camera directly at the sun or at objects that strongly reflect light, such as:
• Mirrors (especially if you're shooting straight at them)
• Mylar balloons
• Wine glasses
• The sun during sunrise or sunset
• Still water reflecting the sun (like a quiet lake)
Super bright light, including reflections from your camera’s flash, can overwhelm the film and create dark or discolored spots. For the best results, adjust your angle or move slightly to avoid direct glare.
